He forced the tiredness off his face the second before he opened the huge wooden door with carved ornaments that led to the bedroom. These last few weeks were taking the toll and the last day was worst of them all. Sebastien disappeared for a couple hours to sort everything out. That included a briefing with security team and a long discussion with his brother who was not too happy right now. But it should be fine, Leon was his monarch, but he was his brother first. Nothing will ever change that. Brothers fight, those too fight more often, but no disagreement can ever make them forget of the fact that they are family. They have a pact in place. Sebastien won't ever make a move for the crown and Leon will let him make his own decisions if they are not a danger to the royal family or the country. Like Sebastien would ever do anything to threaten the monarchy or his family. He was tired but all the adrenaline pumped into his blood stream was keeping him wide awake. Grace was safe, his wife was safe, everyone was safe. What happened today will never happen again, he made sure of it. At least two security details will be assigned to each member of the royal family. Two of Emile's men were guarding the door to the nursery and two more were inside. The protective wards around the castle were enhanced to the almost paranoid level. Sebastien nodded to the guards and went inside the bedroom. For tonight he did everything he could, tomorrow the head of royal security will personally double check everyone who has access to the castle. If there is anyone else entangled in this conspiracy Sebastien will get them soon enough. The lights in the room were dimmed. The log slowly burning in the fireplace cast flickering orange and yellowish light on the floor and walls.
“I thought you would be asleep by now.” He looked at his wife. Sebastien was less angry than before. Partially because he had a guilty party to punish and aim his anger at, partially because he was relieved the danger was gone. “Grace is already sleeping. I have doubled the guards, she will be fine.” She won't remember anything, which is good. Now all that's left is to keep it out of the press. Luckily Leslie volunteered. If someone had enough blackmail and bribe material, it's she and Remy. “You must be exhausted, you should get some rest.” He said in suggestive tone and undid the top button of his shirt. It was a new one. The one he wore that morning had to be tossed, it was blood stained, ripped and dirty. “I will fill you in on the game plan in the morning.” He walked across the room to the window and looked outside to make sure his orders were followed. The guards were patrolling the perimeter ready to take action. “The guilty will be punished first thing tomorrow, every single one of them. This will never happen again, I promise.” He felt guilt that reminded him of the most valuable lesson his father thought him. Never be too confident. Last time, learning that, Sebastien had to bury his mare because of the mistake he made. This time his daughter was in danger. But it all was nothing compared to the guilt Emile felt. It wasn't his shift, wasn't his fault and he couldn't predict this would happen. But Emil always was this way. It was a part of what made him one of the best for this job. Even though Sebastien just promised that would never happen again he thought his word wasn't enough. His word was law for almost everyone. It was enough for his brother, but to Pandora it seemed to mean way less. Sebastien seemed calm, he almost always did, even in the moments when he was consumed by anger. He was a royal, he had obligations, he had to behave a certain way and act a certain way.
[indent] She seating on the bad and thinking about last night incident. It was so scaring. To this day Pandora hasn't realized how credible threat. All this time she living in the another world. It was the place where “danger” - it’s only word. When Sebastien, his mothers, Emil or someone inside courtiers spoke about threaten, she didn't think that they warn about real dangerous for life. Whole time it first it all seemed like a game. Now she is looking at palace differently. So what is this place exactly, besides a health hazard?
[indent] Today she could lose her daughter. Just thinking about that makes she sick.
[indent] Now Grace sleeping in the other room and she was all right. Sebastien doubled the security. But Pandora’s mind kept returning to the past. The minute when she saw “theirs” in the daughter’s sleeping room. It's like the worst feeling in the world. Then she had no doubt what she need to do. Maybe she could've died, but this fact didn't scare like life without Grace.
[indent] Tonight was the first time she shot a man. She didn’t kill him, but she wanted…
[indent] "No", she said, "I'm not tired". Gimaldi kept looking out of the window. There were no stars in the dark sky. Pandora forced herself to address to Sebastien. At that very minute she realized that her feeling not just fear. It’s something more complicated. She could have killed their daughter.
[indent] "Just waiting for you". She don’t looked at her husband. "I just…I am so sorry, Sebastien". Pandora felt ashamed. She tried to say something but could not. Mathieu. Grace. Leslie. It is all an awful mistake. Now she want to tell the truth. Explains why she's acting awful for the last month. She's trying but no words came to her lips. The only time she shuts up.
[indent] "Oh, if only I…" She doesn't know what to say. "I never wanted to disappoint you". She was trying to find the right words to tell it. The silence outside was so thick that she heard it humming in she’s ears. She'd be so embarrassed for her behavior.
[indent] "If you don’t wanna talk I understand". She looked at him and and waited. Yesterday, she was a mistress of the situation. Now she looked like a child.

“What? No.” He stopped trying to unbutton the shirt and sat on the bed next to his wife. Shadows danced on the wall created by the lit fireplace. “Look at me.” He gently lifted her chin so she would look right at him. “It was not your fault. It was only mine. I should have insisted on explaining the game rules to you. I should have taught you how to defend yourself.” Suddenly he realized he couldn’t blame her for anything. Just like that, all she did and all she will do in the future, everything was forgiven. He was still angry with her for not believing him about Leslie though. After all, anger and blame are different things. “Jesus, Pandora, really? I have been talking since the engagement, but you either don’t believe a single word I say or decide not to pay any attention at all. And now you want to talk?” Sebastien shook his head and turned away erasing the ironic grin off his face. It only took her about a year, a near death experience and a kidnapping of their daughter for her to want to really talk. Better late then never, or whatever cliché thing they usually say.
“I didn’t mean it to sound so harsh. You scared me to death, I am still angry, my brother is furious with me and I have to deal with too many urgent things, but I will talk.” He took a deep breath. Sebastien hated explaining himself to anyone. It was simply not in his nature. He touched the Monaco crest mark that was burned deep into the palm of his left hand. Another thing to deal with tomorrow. Not today. Today he will try and talk. Not the best timing, but it must be done. Leslie was right. Pandora must understand the cost of being a Royal. Sebastien himself has been raised to be one and he was used to every ugly detail of being one.
“You never listen. I keep trying to tell things and you always find a way to disregard everything I say. Look, I understand, nobody asked you if you even wanted to marry me. Maybe you never wanted any of this. However, it is too late. So please, just try to listen to me this one time, okay?” Sebastien usually finds a way to hide the fact he is exhausted or that something is wrong. Well, not this time. This time everything that happened in the past few hours can be seen in his eyes. The mask has cracked and everything that he kept locked in this past month just started bleeding through. “You don’t even understand, do you? This was bigger than just an attempt on you and Grace. That was a strike against the crown. I have almost sent my guards after the most obvious suspect. If I went through with it, humiliating one of the most powerful nobles like that, I could have started a civil war. Also, lost my head in the process.” He keeps his voice calm, at least he tries to. “Now, why that was possible for someone to attempt such a manipulative plot? Well, it is so because certain individuals have reasons to believe we are weak. And why is that? First, Leon is young. Most accept him as their ruler, but some think they can use him, or get rid of him and us after that. Second reason is nobles, well, not just them, everyone here respects our culture and traditions. Plotting, manipulating here and there, playing politics. The Game is part of this culture. You don’t want to be a part of it, that’s okay. But you keep acting like you don’t want any of it. The title, the power, the responsibilities that come with it. When you offend all these people on a regular basis, I have no choice but to defend you which offends them even more, which reflects bad on the crown and makes people question our ability to lead. Our power is given to us by the people who serve this crown. So, I am asking you to try to understand that every action we take reflects on this family and this country and there are always consequences.” Today two families had to receive the news of their sons’ death. Those guards who were killed in the castle had parents and wives and children. Of course, they knew the danger that comes with this job, but it didn’t make it easier. Sebastien had to kill today for the first time. In his head he knew it was justified, and he would do it again if he had to, but surprisingly taking a life was not as easy as he thought. He stood up and made a few steps away trying his best to piece himself together.
